One Year Later

No, the time has not flown by that fast, it’s not been one year since I was diagnosed with diabetes, but it has been one year since I took a picture. For some, this might not be a big deal, but for me, I only take pictures for very specific events.

25 Years

In 2017, my wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by taking a week-long cruise to the eastern Caribbean. During that trip, there were lots of opportunities to take pictures and we wanted to record and remember the event.

Fast Forward One Year

Recently, it was one year later after our cruise and I found myself taking pictures again to remember the occasion. As I was looking at the pictures from this year, I was reminded of the pictures we took just one year before.

As I started reviewing these images from one year before, I quickly realized exactly how my weight I have really lost. When you put the two images side-by-side it was even more dramatic.

I Can’t Believe the Difference

If you take a look at the image attached to this article you will see the comparison. In the image on the left my beautiful wife and I was in the Caribbean enjoying a day on an island. As you can see from the picture, I was way overweight and it showed big time.

The left side of the image was from April when I ran in the runDisney Star Wars Half Marathon’s 5K. When you put these two images side by side, you can really see the dramatic change and transformation that has lead to my reversal.

Simple Principals

The part that really amazes me is how three simple principals have affected me in such a dramatic way. I talk about these three principals all the time, but I don’t always call them out as such.

The first principal is portion control. As a diabetic, you must learn to measure what you eat to enable you to control how much you eat. Portion Control does not mean starving, it means eating the correct foods in correct portions to manage your blood sugar levels.

Which leads me to principal two, eating the right foods. Lite, Fat-Free, Low Calories … doesn’t always translate to Diabetic friendly. There are lots of products that proclaim they are “healthy” but not for a diabetic. We have special dietary needs and we need to learn to read nutritional labels correctly to understand what affects us versus other dietary needs.

The last principal of the three is understanding your glucose curve. If you don’t understand what your glucose curve is or how to measure it, please read my article about the Me and My Glucose Curve. You need to understand how your body responds to different forms of carbohydrates and sugars. As I have measured my Glucose curve I have found that rice affects me more than bread. Armed with this type of information helps me to make better eating decisions and helps me to regulate my sugar better. You need to know this information for yourself.

What other principals have you discovered? Do you have a dramatic turn around story? Share it with us below.
